Introduction
A sprained ankle may cause discomfort such as swelling, pain, joint deformity, and limited mobility. Patients can alleviate swelling and pain by elevating the affected limb, applying cold or warm compresses, and using medications. If swelling and pain persist despite these measures, prompt medical attention is recommended to avoid delayed treatment and potential unforeseen complications.

In general, an anklesprain may lead to discomforts such as ankle swelling, pain, joint deformity, and restricted movement. Patients can relieve swelling and pain by elevating the affected limb, applying cold compresses, warm compresses, or using medications. Specific approaches are as follows:

  1. Elevate the affected limb: Have the patient sit down and use pillows, blankets, clothing, or similar items to prop up the injured foot. This helps improve venous return in the foot and reduces swelling.

  2. Cold compress: Within the first 24 hours after the sprain, wrap ice in a towel and apply it to the affected area for 15–20 minutes at a time, approximately every three hours. This helps constrict blood vessels and reduce swelling.

  3. Warm compress: After 24 hours, use a towel soaked in warm water (wring out excess water) and apply it to the injured area. This promotes blood circulation and helps reduce edema.

  4. Medication: If pain persists, patients may take medications such as Shujin Huoxue Tablets or Compound Sanqi Tablets under medical guidance.

If swelling and pain continue despite these measures, prompt medical attention is recommended to avoid delayed treatment and potential complications.
