How is a TCT test performed?

Introduction
TCT refers to liquid-based thin-layer cytology testing, which can detect cervical epithelial cell abnormalities and is an effective method for early screening of cervical cancer. It is recommended that women undergo annual cervical cancer screening, including TCT testing and HPV testing, even if they have no symptoms, as long as they have a history of sexual activity.

TCT, or ThinPrep Cytologic Test, is a liquid-based cytology test capable of detecting cervical epithelial cell abnormalities and serves as an effective method for early screening of cervical cancer. The specific procedure is as follows:

1. Registration and prescription: The patient discusses with the doctor and expresses the need for cervical cancer screening. After payment, the patient returns to the examination room to prepare for the test.

2. Preparation for examination: After medical staff verify the patient's information, the patient lies flat on the examination table with legs spread and bent, feet placed on stirrups, to expose the external genitalia.

3. Sample collection in the examination room: The secretions on the surface of the cervix are wiped away. A vaginal speculum is used to open the vagina and expose the cervix. A cytology brush is inserted into the cervical canal, positioned approximately 1 cm above the external cervical os, and rotated several times to collect exfoliated cells from the surface of the cervix or cervical canal.

4. Sample preservation: The collected cells on the brush are rinsed off and preserved in a vial containing preservative fluid.

5. Laboratory analysis: The collected cells are processed into slides, examined under a microscope, and analyzed for morphological characteristics. Based on this evaluation, the final diagnostic result is determined.

It is recommended that women, even if they have no symptoms, undergo annual cervical cancer screening—including TCT testing and HPV testing—once they become sexually active.
