How is a TCT test performed?
Generally, TCT testing is short for liquid-based thin-layer cytology test, which can be used for preliminary screening of cervical cancer and precancerous lesions. The specific procedure is as follows:
1. Position the patient in the lithotomy position to expose the external genitalia.
2. The doctor inserts a vaginal speculum into the vagina to expose the cervix. A plastic cytology brush is gently rotated 4–5 times within the cervical canal to collect surface cells from the cervix.
3. Place the plastic cytology brush into a vial of preservative fluid and send it to the pathology department.
4. Pathologists process the preserved exfoliated cells into slides, examine them under a microscope, and evaluate the results.
The liquid-based thin-layer cytology test should not be performed during menstruation. Avoid sexual intercourse, use of intimate cleansers, or vaginal medications the day before the test to prevent interference with test results. If you wish to undergo a liquid-based thin-layer cytology test, it is recommended to visit a reputable hospital to ensure accurate results.
