What to do if a foreign object is inhaled into the trachea
Generally, when a foreign object is inhaled into the trachea, the Heimlich maneuver can be used to expel the object and relieve discomfort. The specific steps are as follows:
1. The rescuer stands behind the patient, stabilizing their stance with one leg forward and the other back, then wraps their arms under the patient's armpits to embrace them.
2. Make a fist with the left hand and place the knuckle of the thumb against the midpoint of the line connecting the patient's xiphoid process and navel.
3. Place the right hand over the left fist and deliver 5–10 quick, forceful inward and upward thrusts to increase intrathoracic pressure and dislodge the object.
If this method fails to remove the foreign body, prompt medical attention is recommended, and removal via bronchoscopy may be necessary.
