1. **Affecting nervous system regulation:** Sleep deprivation can impair normal nervous system functions, including those of the autonomic nervous system and endocrine system. These systems play crucial roles in regulating digestion—such as promoting gastrointestinal motility and secretion of digestive fluids. Sleep loss may disrupt this regulatory balance, thereby interfering with the digestive process.

2. **Exacerbating stress responses:** Lack of sleep puts the body into a state of stress, triggering the release of stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. These hormones can impair normal gastrointestinal function—for example, by increasing gastric acid secretion and reducing gastrointestinal motility—leading to indigestion.
