What causes vulvar itching?
Generally, vulvar itching may be caused by tight underwear, poor hygiene habits, eczema, vulvovaginal candidiasis, bacterial vaginosis, or other reasons. It is recommended to seek medical attention promptly, identify the underlying cause, and receive symptomatic treatment under a doctor's guidance. Specific analysis is as follows:
1. Tight underwear: Wearing overly tight underwear may impair ventilation in the vulvar area, creating a warm and moist environment that can lead to itching. It is advisable to switch to properly fitting underwear that is loose and comfortable.
2. Poor hygiene habits: Failure to clean the vulva regularly can promote bacterial growth, resulting in noticeable itching. Good hygiene practices should be adopted, including daily cleansing of the vulva with clean water and gentle drying.
3. Eczema: This may be associated with environmental changes, stress, or emotional tension. When eczema develops in the vulvar area, it can cause symptoms such as red rash and itching. Patients may use medications such as compound dexamethasone cream, zinc oxide ointment, or calamine lotion as directed by a physician.
4. Vulvovaginal candidiasis: This is a fungal infection of the vulva and vagina caused by Candida species. Common symptoms include vulvar itching and increased vaginal discharge. Patients may be prescribed antifungal medications such as terbinafine hydrochloride vaginal effervescent tablets, itraconazole capsules, or clotrimazole cream, following medical advice.
5. Bacterial vaginosis: This condition results from an imbalance in vaginal flora, particularly a reduction in lactobacilli. Inflammation often leads to increased vaginal discharge and vulvar itching. Treatment may include medications such as miconazole nitrate suppositories, nifuratel-nystatin vaginal tablets, or Xiaomi effervescent vaginal tablets, used according to a doctor’s instructions.
Avoid scratching the itchy area to prevent worsening infection. Maintain a light diet and avoid spicy and irritating foods such as chili peppers, Sichuan pepper, raw onions, and raw garlic.
