Airborne SO₂ concentrations exceeding 0.5 ppm already exert potential adverse effects on the body; at 1–3 ppm, most individuals begin experiencing irritation; exposure to concentrations of 400–500 ppm may cause ulceration and pulmonary edema, ultimately leading to asphyxiation and death.

Acute poisoning: Mild intoxication manifests as lacrimation, photophobia, coughing, and burning pain in the pharynx and larynx. Severe poisoning may induce pulmonary edema within several hours; inhalation of extremely high concentrations can trigger reflex laryngospasm, resulting in asphyxiation. Skin or ocular contact may cause inflammation or chemical burns.

Chronic effects: Prolonged exposure to low concentrations may lead to systemic symptoms—including headache, dizziness, and fatigue—as well as chronic rhinitis, tonsillitis, bronchitis, and diminished olfactory and gustatory function.

After clinical improvement, dietary adjustments are advised—opting for light, easily digestible meals rich in vegetables and fruits.
