Can you eat before having a brain MRI?
Generally, "brain MRI" refers to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the head. Patients can eat before undergoing a cranial MRI, as explained below:
Cranial MRI primarily focuses on the brain's internal structure and functional status, which is generally not directly affected by food in the digestive tract. Therefore, patients may eat prior to the scan. However, it is important to note that cranial MRI uses a strong magnetic field, so patients must avoid bringing any metal objects into the examination room. If a patient has metallic implants such as a pacemaker or artificial heart valves, they should inform the doctor in advance to prevent potential health risks. Additionally, items such as wigs and cosmetics should be removed beforehand to avoid artifacts that could interfere with diagnostic accuracy.
Patients are advised to wear loose clothing without metal decorations during the examination, remain calm and relaxed, and keep their head completely still to ensure accurate imaging results.
