What causes dry heaving?
In general, dry heaving may be caused by improper diet, pregnancy reactions, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), liver dysfunction, chronic pharyngitis, and other reasons. If the above conditions occur, it is recommended to seek timely medical treatment. The specific analysis is as follows:
1. Improper Diet
Overeating or consuming excessive spicy, raw, cold, or greasy foods can irritate the gastric mucosa, causing gastric spasms or upward movement of stomach qi, thus leading to dry heaving. In daily life, one should adjust dietary habits and avoid eating spicy and irritating foods.
2. Pregnancy Reaction
In early pregnancy, hormonal changes in the body—especially increased levels of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG)—can stimulate the gastrointestinal tract, triggering dry heaving and other early pregnancy symptoms. Regular health check-ups are recommended to monitor fetal development.
3. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
GERD is mainly caused by dysfunction of the lower esophageal sphincter or increased intragastric pressure. This condition can lead to excessive gastric acid secretion or damage to the gastric mucosa, stimulating the stomach wall and causing gastric spasms or upward movement of stomach qi, resulting in the aforementioned symptoms. It may also be accompanied by stomach pain, bloating, and other discomforts. Treatment should follow medical advice and may include medications such as lansoprazole enteric-coated tablets, mosapride citrate tablets, and sucralfate suspension gel.
4. Liver Dysfunction
Excessive alcohol consumption, fatty liver, and similar factors may lead to liver dysfunction. Impaired liver function reduces digestive enzyme production, affecting food digestion and absorption. It may also cause bile stasis, irritating the gastrointestinal tract and thereby inducing dry heaving. Symptoms may include jaundice, fatigue, and liver area pain. Patients should follow medical guidance and use medications such as diammonium glycyrrhizinate capsules, ursodeoxycholic acid capsules, and bifendate drops for treatment.
5. Chronic Pharyngitis
Chronic pharyngitis is primarily caused by smoking, air pollution, and spicy foods. Long-term irritation of the throat leads to congestion and swelling of the pharyngeal mucosa, which can trigger dry heaving. Other symptoms may include sore throat, cough, and hoarseness. Treatment under medical guidance may include medications such as pharyngitis tablets, cydiodine lozenges, and compound Sarcandra glabra lozenges.
To prevent dry heaving and other discomforts, individuals should maintain healthy lifestyle habits, including a balanced diet, avoiding excessive intake of irritating foods, reducing tobacco and alcohol consumption, maintaining clean air, and regularly monitoring their health status.
