Can expired lotus leaf tea still be consumed?
Generally speaking, expired lotus leaf tea should not be consumed.
Lotus leaf tea contains various components such as lotus leaf alkaloids, citric acid, malic acid, gluconic acid, oxalic acid, and succinic acid, as well as alkaline substances with anti-mitotic effects. It has the effect of clearing heat and relieving summer heat, helping to alleviate symptoms like thirst and irritability caused by excessive heat. However, after expiration, the lotus leaf alkaloids in the tea may undergo oxidation over time, gradually reducing in content and diminishing the tea's original benefits such as weight loss, lipid-lowering, and heat-clearing properties. Expired lotus leaf tea may also breed large amounts of bacteria, mold, and other microorganisms. Drinking expired tea allows these microbes to enter the body, potentially causing gastrointestinal discomfort such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, and vomiting, thereby posing a risk to health. Therefore, it is generally not recommended to consume lotus leaf tea after it has expired.
It is advisable to avoid purchasing excessive amounts of lotus leaf tea at once, aiming instead to finish it within a relatively short period. Store the tea in a tightly sealed container in a dry environment to prevent moisture, mold, and spoilage, thus preserving its effectiveness.
