Introduction
Bowlegs refer to genu varum. There is no such thing as a list of the most effective methods for improving genu varum. Genu varum may be caused by factors such as genetics, natural phenomena during growth and development, prolonged incorrect walking or standing posture, fractures, vitamin D deficiency rickets, and others. Methods to improve genu varum include general treatment, drug therapy, etc.

Generally speaking, bowed legs refer to genu varum (knee inward deformity). There is no single most effective method for improving genu varum. Genu varum may be caused by factors such as genetics, natural phenomena during growth and development, prolonged incorrect walking or standing posture, fractures, vitamin D deficiency rickets, among others. Methods to improve genu varum include general treatments, medication therapy, etc. A detailed analysis is as follows:

1. Genetics

If there is a family history of genu varum, individuals are more likely to develop this condition. Mild cases of genu varum can be improved by correcting walking and standing posture and performing lower limb muscle exercises. For more severe symptoms, clinically specialized braces and bandages can be applied to the legs three times daily—morning, afternoon, and evening—for at least 20 minutes each session, which can also help correct bowed legs.

2. Natural phenomenon during growth and development

During infancy and adolescence, due to immature skeletal and muscular development, the lower limbs often exhibit a certain degree of inward or outward angulation. This usually causes no significant discomfort and only presents mild cosmetic abnormalities. No specific treatment is required, and genu varum may naturally resolve as growth and development continue.

3. Prolonged incorrect walking and standing posture

Long-term maintenance of improper walking or standing postures, such as walking with toes pointing inward ("pigeon-toed") or prolonged standing, may lead to abnormal development of lower limb muscles and bones, resulting in structural imbalance on the inner and outer sides of the knee joint, ultimately causing genu varum. It is recommended to correct walking and standing postures and avoid maintaining the same position for extended periods.

4. Fractures

Trauma or cumulative overuse injuries may cause lower limb fractures. Improper management or poor healing after a fracture can result in abnormal bone morphology and structural imbalance around the knee joint, leading to genu varum. This may also be accompanied by symptoms such as pain, swelling, and limited mobility at the fracture site. Medications such as Jiegu Qili tablets, Shangke Jiegu tablets, or Musk Bone-Healing capsules may be used under medical guidance.

5. Vitamin D deficiency rickets

Vitamin D deficiency rickets may arise from insufficient intake or poor absorption of vitamin D, causing abnormal calcium and phosphorus metabolism, bone softening, and deformation. This leads to structural imbalance in the knee joint and eventually results in genu varum. Common accompanying symptoms include bone deformities, irritability, and excessive sweating. Treatments may include vitamin AD drops, calcium carbonate D3 granules, or vitamin D2 soft capsules, used as directed by a physician.

In daily life, attention should be paid to correcting walking and standing postures, avoiding prolonged static positions, and engaging in appropriate lower limb muscle exercises to prevent and improve genu varum.
