What causes itching on a child's body?
Generally, itching on a child's body may be caused by dry skin, insect bites, allergic reactions, heat rash (prickly heat), eczema, or other reasons, and different approaches are required depending on the specific situation.
1. Dry skin: When the air humidity is low, moisture is easily lost from a child's skin. Frequent bathing or using harsh bathing products can also damage the skin's natural oil layer, leading to dryness. It is recommended to use a humidifier indoors to increase air humidity and reduce the frequency of bathing appropriately.
2. Insect bites: A child's skin is tender and easily bitten by insects. During a bite, insects inject saliva into the skin, causing itching and swelling. It is advised to wash the affected area with soap and water to relieve the itching.
3. Allergic reactions: Children may be allergic to certain foods, substances they come into contact with, or inhaled allergens. When a child is exposed to an allergen, their immune system reacts, causing skin itching. The child should avoid contact with the allergen again and take medications such as cetirizine hydrochloride tablets or loratadine tablets as directed by a physician to alleviate symptoms.
4. Heat rash (prickly heat): Excessive sweating in children can lead to blocked sweat glands when sweat does not drain properly, causing heat rash. It is recommended to keep the child's skin clean and dry, and apply calamine lotion, talcum powder, or other medications as directed by a physician to relieve itching.
5. Eczema: Eczema may be triggered when a child's skin is irritated—for example, by exposure to irritating chemicals, or frequent scratching. In such cases, it is recommended to use medications such as mometasone furoate cream, desonide cream, or hydrocortisone butyrate cream under the guidance of a doctor.
When a child experiences itching, parents should monitor the child's scratching behavior to prevent skin damage and subsequent infection. If the itching persists without improvement or is accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, prompt medical attention should be sought.
