The Efficacy, Effects, and Indications of Polyporus Umbellatus (Zhu Ling)
Generally, it has functions and effects such as promoting diuresis and reducing edema, eliminating dampness, regulating the spleen and stomach, calming the mind to aid sleep, and anti-inflammatory and antibacterial actions. It is mainly used to treat conditions such as difficult urination, edema and distension, diarrhea, stranguria, and phlegm-fluid retention. Details are as follows:

I. Functions and Effects
1. Diuretic and Reduces Edema: Polyporus umbellatus (Zhu Ling) has a diuretic effect, which can promote the excretion of excess fluid from the body, thereby alleviating symptoms of edema. This effect is particularly evident in treating conditions such as edema, dropsy, and frequent urination.
2. Drains Dampness: Zhu Ling can remove dampness from the body and improve discomfort caused by excessive dampness. It is often used in combination with other water-draining and dampness-resolving herbs, such as Poria (Fu Ling) and Alisma (Ze Xie), to enhance therapeutic effectiveness.
3. Regulates Spleen and Stomach: Zhu Ling can regulate the functions of the spleen and stomach, promote digestion and absorption, enhance appetite, and improve conditions such as indigestion and loss of appetite caused by spleen and stomach weakness.
4. Calm the Mind and Aid Sleep: Zhu Ling has a calming effect, helping to relieve anxiety, insomnia, and excessive dreaming, which are related to nervous system disorders, thereby improving sleep quality.
5. Anti-inflammatory and Antibacterial: Zhu Ling has certain anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, which can inhibit inflammatory responses and the growth of pathogenic microorganisms, aiding in the treatment of infectious and inflammatory diseases.
II. Main Indications
1. Difficult Urination: Zhu Ling has a sweet and bland taste with a neutral nature, acting on the kidney and bladder meridians. One of its primary functions is promoting diuresis and removing dampness, making it effective in treating difficult urination caused by internal accumulation of dampness. When the body's fluid metabolism is impaired, such as in urinary tract infections or prostate diseases causing difficulty in urination, Zhu Ling can increase urine output to promote the elimination of dampness.
2. Edema and Distension: Zhu Ling promotes diuresis and reduces swelling, making it applicable for both generalized and localized edema. It can treat edema caused by kidney disease, heart disease, etc. For generalized edema caused by nephrotic syndrome, Zhu Ling can regulate fluid metabolism, excreting excess fluid through urine and alleviating edema symptoms.
3. Diarrhea: Zhu Ling has the effect of draining dampness to stop diarrhea. When the spleen and stomach functions are impaired due to excessive dampness, causing diarrhea, Zhu Ling helps eliminate internal dampness. Especially for diarrhea caused by accumulation of dampness in the intestines, such as summer-heat-dampness-induced diarrhea, Zhu Ling can effectively drain dampness and improve diarrhea symptoms.
4. Stranguria: Zhu Ling plays an important role in treating stranguria. Heat stranguria is mainly caused by damp-heat accumulation in the lower jiao, leading to symptoms such as frequent urination, urgency, and painful urination due to impaired bladder transformation and transportation function. Zhu Ling, through its diuretic action, can clear damp-heat from the lower jiao and relieve these symptoms. For stone stranguria, i.e., stranguria caused by urinary tract stones, Zhu Ling increases urine output, which helps expel the stones.
5. Phlegm-Fluid Retention: Zhu Ling has a certain therapeutic effect on phlegm-fluid retention. "Xuan Yin" refers to fluid retention in the chest and hypochondriac regions, causing symptoms such as chest and hypochondriac distension and pain. Zhu Ling, through its diuretic and dampness-resolving action, can eliminate accumulated fluid via urination, thus relieving the sensation of distension in the chest area.
When using Zhu Ling, it should be applied appropriately according to specific conditions and medical advice, avoiding adverse reactions caused by excessive or improper use.
