Can proctitis turn into cancer?

Introduction
If it is nonspecific proctitis, the inflammation can be controlled and gradually subsides, and proctitis generally does not directly lead to cancerous changes. However, if it is chronic inflammatory bowel disease and the inflammation remains uncontrolled over a long period, persistent chronic inflammation may increase the likelihood of mutations in intestinal epithelial cells, thereby raising the risk of cancer development.

Whether proctitis (rectal inflammation) develops into cancer mainly depends on its type and progression. The specific analysis is as follows:

Any inflammation occurring in the rectum can be termed proctitis. Common symptoms of proctitis include anal heaviness, diarrhea, tenesmus (urgent but ineffective defecation), passage of blood or mucus in the stool, or stools containing both mucus and blood. Non-specific proctitis is typically caused by infection, improper diet, stress, or other factors. In most cases, it is self-limiting, meaning the inflammation can be controlled and gradually resolved through appropriate treatment and lifestyle adjustments. Under such circumstances, proctitis generally does not directly lead to cancerous changes.

However, if the condition is chronic inflammatory bowel disease, such as ulcerative colitis, characterized by prolonged inflammation of the intestinal mucosa, the inflammation may persist for years or even decades if left uncontrolled. Long-term chronic inflammation increases the likelihood of genetic mutations in intestinal epithelial cells, thereby raising the risk of cancer development.

In daily life, it is important to maintain dietary hygiene, avoid consuming contaminated or irritating foods, eat more high-fiber foods, maintain regular bowel habits, engage in physical exercise, enhance immunity, practice good personal hygiene, and undergo regular intestinal examinations.
