What are some effective methods for treating the common cold?
Over 80% of common colds are caused by viral infections; clinically, patients are advised to drink plenty of fluids and get adequate rest.

There are three primary approaches to treating and preventing the common cold:
Select medications based on specific cold symptoms. For example, if a patient experiences nasal congestion, runny nose, or sneezing, decongestants containing pseudoephedrine—such as Contac, New Contac, or Tylenol Cold & Flu—may be appropriate.
Minimize contact with others, especially avoiding face-to-face exposure—for instance, when others cough or sneeze—to reduce the risk of transmitting the infection.
Strengthen one’s own immune defenses—for example, by dressing appropriately for the weather and engaging in regular physical exercise.
