Why should patients with influenza drink more water?
Generally speaking, "swine flu" refers to the influenza A virus. There are several reasons why patients with the influenza A virus should drink more water, including preventing dehydration, relieving respiratory symptoms, regulating body temperature, promoting metabolism, and reducing medication side effects. Details are as follows:

1. Preventing dehydration: Patients often experience fever symptoms. Elevated body temperature accelerates the evaporation and loss of body fluids through the skin, while respiratory symptoms also increase fluid consumption. Drinking more water can effectively replenish lost fluids, prevent dehydration, and maintain fluid balance in the body.
2. Relieving respiratory symptoms: Drinking more water helps thin mucus, making it easier to cough out and thus relieving respiratory discomfort. Meanwhile, water can lubricate the throat, reducing discomfort caused by coughing and sore throat.
3. Regulating body temperature: When fever occurs, drinking more water can help the body dissipate heat and regulate body temperature through perspiration and urination, thereby reducing discomfort caused by fever.
4. Promoting metabolism: Increased water intake promotes the body's metabolism, accelerating the elimination of the virus and aiding recovery. Faster metabolism helps the body produce antibodies and immune cells more quickly, effectively fighting the virus.
5. Reducing medication side effects: During treatment for the influenza A virus, patients may need to take certain medications. Drinking more water helps dilute the concentration of medications in the body, reducing gastrointestinal irritation and side effects. Additionally, increased water intake aids in medication absorption and excretion, enhancing its therapeutic effect.
Although drinking more water benefits patients with the influenza A virus, excessive water intake should be avoided. Excessive water consumption may increase fluid load, worsening heart failure or kidney failure. Moreover, patients with the influenza A virus should choose plain, non-irritating water or tea when drinking, avoiding stimulants like coffee and alcohol.
