Can geranium be used for burns?
Caution should be exercised when applying geranium externally to relieve mild redness, swelling, or minor superficial burns; however, it is not suitable for severe burns, broken skin, or infected wounds. If in doubt, it is recommended to seek medical advice in advance. Detailed explanation is as follows:
Geranium contains tannic acid and anti-inflammatory components. For mild burns such as reddened skin or small unbroken blisters, it may be decocted and used as a cold compress to help alleviate the sensation of heat and local inflammation. This should be done after cleaning and disinfecting the affected area, combined with cold therapy.
If the burn covers a large area, reaches the dermis, appears pale or forms a scar, or if blister rupture with exudation or infection and pus formation occurs, geranium may irritate the wound, increase the risk of infection, and even hinder the absorption of professional medications. Immediate medical attention is required in such cases.
Prior to application, the affected area should be rinsed with cold water for at least 15 minutes. For minor burns, external application should not exceed 30 minutes. If pain worsens or swelling spreads, discontinue use immediately and seek hospital treatment.
