Can Pulsatilla chinensis be used to treat menorrhagia or metrorrhagia?
Generally speaking, Pulsatilla (Baitouweng) can be used to treat excessive vaginal bleeding outside of menstruation (benlou), but its effectiveness is limited. It is recommended to use this herb under the guidance of a physician. A detailed explanation is as follows:

Benlou refers to the condition in women characterized by increased vaginal bleeding and prolonged spotting outside the menstrual period. Pulsatilla has the effect of cooling the blood and stopping bleeding, thus helping to alleviate physical damage caused by benlou or other hemorrhagic diseases. Additionally, its function of clearing heat and detoxifying can aid in eliminating heat pathogens in the body, making it beneficial for treating symptoms like benlou caused by heat toxicity.
However, the causes of benlou are complex. Besides heat toxicity, it may also be related to kidney deficiency, spleen deficiency, blood stasis, and other factors. If the benlou is caused by conditions such as kidney or spleen deficiency, using Pulsatilla alone may not achieve the desired therapeutic effect. Moreover, due to its cold nature, Pulsatilla might further impair the spleen and stomach's yang energy, thereby worsening the condition. Therefore, without a clear TCM syndrome differentiation by a licensed practitioner, Pulsatilla should not be used arbitrarily for treating benlou.
During the course of treatment, patients should also maintain a light diet and avoid consuming spicy, greasy, or cold foods, as these may interfere with the herb's effectiveness.
