Tumors are classified as benign or malignant. Malignant tumors are what we commonly refer to as cancer. There are substantial differences between benign and malignant tumors, summarized as follows: 1. Growth rate: Benign tumors generally grow slowly, whereas malignant tumors grow rapidly; 2. Metastasis: Benign tumors neither recur nor metastasize, while malignant tumor cells can spread via blood vessels or lymphatic vessels; 3. Impact on health: Benign tumors pose relatively minor threats to patient health, whereas malignant tumors can quickly become life-threatening.

Differences Between Benign and Malignant Tumors

1. Growth Rate

Benign tumor: Typically grows slowly, exhibiting expansive growth. It is usually encapsulated, compresses but does not infiltrate surrounding tissues, and feels mobile upon palpation. Its consistency is relatively soft, with clear demarcation from adjacent normal tissue, making surgical resection straightforward.

Malignant tumor: Grows rapidly, invades surrounding tissues, lacks clear boundaries with adjacent structures, feels firm or hard, and is unencapsulated. In addition to increased size, it often extends and spreads into surrounding areas, demonstrating strong destructive and cytotoxic potential.

2. Metastasis

Benign tumor: Does not recur or metastasize; local necrosis or hemorrhage does not occur. Histopathological examination reveals cellular architecture similar to normal cells, with no evidence of mitotic figures; thus, it poses no threat to life.

Malignant tumor: In advanced stages, it often becomes fixed to a specific organ or tissue, accompanied by necrosis, ulceration, and bleeding—conditions that are difficult to control and heal. Surgical resection is challenging, and recurrence after surgery is common. Moreover, cancer cells may metastasize early via blood vessels or lymphatic channels to distant sites.

3. Impact on Health

Benign tumor: Due to its expansive growth pattern, large benign tumors may compress adjacent organs, causing discomfort. However, symptoms are typically localized and pose minimal overall threat to patient health.

Malignant tumor: Possesses potent capacity for dissemination and metastasis, causing extensive organ damage. Patients frequently develop clinical manifestations such as weight loss, anemia, and cachexia—and the disease may rapidly become fatal.
