1. Wound Coverage and Protection: After opening the sterile packaging, place the cotton pad flat over the cleaned wound surface, ensuring the edges extend 2–3 cm beyond the wound margins. This prevents external contamination and creates a sterile environment conducive to wound healing.
2. Absorption of Secretions: For wounds with bleeding or exudate, select a cotton pad of appropriate thickness to absorb secretions and maintain a dry wound surface. Replace the pad promptly when more than two-thirds of its area becomes soaked to prevent backflow of fluids and potential infection.
3. Medicated Wet Dressing: Soak the cotton pad in an appropriate amount of topical medicinal solution, then gently squeeze until no dripping occurs before applying it to the affected area. This method can help reduce inflammation and swelling and clean the wound. Keep the pad moist during treatment and follow prescribed duration guidelines based on the medication used.
4. Skin Cleansing and Care: When used for skin cleaning, the cotton pad may be moistened with normal saline or a disinfectant solution to gently wipe away dirt, secretions, or residual medication from the skin surface. Handle gently to avoid damaging skin or mucous membranes, making it especially suitable for sensitive areas.
5. Postoperative Wound Care: When using cotton pads on postoperative wounds, secure them with medical tape or fixation dressings to prevent displacement during movement. Change daily as directed by a healthcare provider. Always wash hands before each dressing change and strictly follow aseptic procedures.
Prior to use, inspect the packaging for integrity and expiration date. Use immediately after opening to avoid contamination. Select a pad size and thickness appropriate for the wound size and level of exudate. After use, dispose of according to medical waste regulations—do not reuse.
