Introduction
To ensure hygiene and effectiveness, medical sterile gauze pads should be used following standardized procedures, including checking the packaging and expiration date, cleaning the area to be treated, removing and properly placing the gauze pad, securing the pad (if needed), and replacing and disposing of the pad appropriately. Before use, inspect the packaging for integrity, ensuring there is no damage or air leakage, and confirm that the product is within its validity period.

When using sterile medical cotton pads, it is essential to follow standardized procedures to ensure hygiene and effectiveness. The general steps include checking the packaging and expiration date, cleaning the area to be treated, removing and properly placing the cotton pad, securing the pad (if necessary), and replacing and disposing of the pad appropriately. A detailed explanation is as follows:

1. Check packaging and expiration date: Before use, inspect the cotton pad packaging for integrity—ensure there are no damages or leaks—and verify that the product is within its expiration date. If the packaging is compromised or the product has expired, the sterility of the cotton pad may be lost, making it unsuitable for use to prevent potential infections.

2. Clean the treatment area: Gently wipe the area where the cotton pad will be applied with normal saline or a cleansing solution recommended by a healthcare provider, removing surface dirt, secretions, or residual medication. Then, gently pat the area dry with clean gauze to keep it clean and dry.

3. Remove and correctly place the cotton pad: Open the intact package and use sterile forceps or clean, dry hands to remove the cotton pad, avoiding contact with the side intended to touch the wound. Place the pad flat over the wound, injured area, or site requiring absorption of exudate, ensuring complete coverage of the target area.

4. Secure the cotton pad (as needed): If the cotton pad is used on a body part with significant movement or needs to remain in position for an extended period, gently secure the edges with medical tape or an elastic bandage. Ensure the fixation is neither too tight (to avoid impairing blood circulation) nor too loose (to prevent displacement).

5. Replace and dispose of the cotton pad: Replace the cotton pad regularly according to care requirements or medical advice—typically 1–2 times daily—or immediately if it becomes soaked with exudate. Used cotton pads should be discarded following medical waste disposal guidelines; never reuse or dispose of them casually. After handling, wash hands thoroughly.

Strict aseptic technique must be maintained when using sterile medical cotton pads. If signs such as redness, increased pain, excessive or abnormal discharge, or foul odor occur at the treatment site, discontinue self-care immediately and seek medical attention.
