Introduction
If cough is caused by the common cold or mild bronchitis, and there are no severe symptoms such as high fever, chest tightness, or difficulty breathing, foot soaking may provide some supportive benefits. Soaking feet in warm water can promote blood circulation in the lower limbs, relieve physical fatigue, help relax the nervous system, and improve sleep disturbances caused by coughing, thereby indirectly creating favorable conditions for recovery, without exacerbating cough symptoms.

Generally, foot soaking may have auxiliary benefits when coughing is not accompanied by high fever or severe fatigue. However, it is not recommended if there is high fever or serious cardiopulmonary discomfort. If in doubt, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional in advance. Specific analysis is as follows:

If the cough is caused by a common cold or mild bronchitis and there are no severe symptoms such as high fever (body temperature below 38.5°C), chest tightness, or difficulty breathing, foot soaking can provide certain supportive benefits. Soaking feet in warm water promotes blood circulation in the lower limbs, relieves physical fatigue, helps relax the nervous system, improves sleep disturbances caused by coughing, and thereby indirectly supports recovery, without worsening cough symptoms.

However, if coughing is accompanied by high fever (body temperature above 38.5°C), severe fatigue, palpitations, or shortness of breath, foot soaking is not recommended. During high fever, the body needs to dissipate heat as a priority; soaking feet in hot water may cause blood vessel dilation and blood pressure fluctuations, potentially exacerbating fatigue or palpitations. For individuals with significant heart or lung discomfort, foot soaking may increase physical strain and even impair respiratory function, which could be detrimental to disease management.

When soaking feet while coughing, the water temperature should be maintained between 38–42°C, and the duration should ideally be 15–20 minutes. After soaking, dry the feet promptly and keep them warm to avoid catching a chill. If dizziness or palpitations occur during the process, stop immediately, rest, and seek medical evaluation if necessary to rule out underlying health issues.
