Introduction
In general, neck and shoulder massage primarily targets key areas of the neck and shoulders. Common sites include the posterior neck muscles, Jianjing point (GB21), trapezius muscle, medial border of the scapula, and Fengchi point (GB20). When performing neck and shoulder massage, it is important to observe contraindications and precautions, control the pressure applied, avoid excessive force that may injure muscles, and ensure proper massage techniques are used.

Generally, neck and shoulder massage focuses on key areas of the neck and shoulders. Common target sites include the posterior neck muscles, Jianjing (Shoulder Well) acupoint, trapezius muscle, medial border of the scapula, and Fengchi (Wind Pool) acupoint. A detailed analysis is as follows:

1. Posterior neck muscles: Located at the back of the neck, these muscles extend from below the occiput to the junction of the neck and shoulders. Massaging this area helps relieve neck muscle tension and stiffness, alleviates neck soreness caused by prolonged head-down postures, and promotes relaxation of neck muscles.

2. Jianjing acupoint (GB21): Located on the shoulder, at the midpoint of the line connecting the Dazhui acupoint (GV14) and the lateral end of the shoulder (acromion). This acupoint is a key site in neck and shoulder massage. Stimulating it helps unblock meridians, relieve distension and pain in the neck and shoulders, and improve restricted shoulder movement.

3. Trapezius muscle: Extending from the neck to the upper back, this muscle covers a large area at the back of the neck and shoulders. Massaging this muscle helps reduce muscle fatigue and alleviate soreness and heaviness in the neck and shoulders caused by muscle tension, making it especially beneficial for people who sit for long periods.

4. Medial border of the scapula: This refers to the edge of the scapula closest to the spine. This area is prone to soreness due to muscle strain. Massaging it helps relax surrounding muscles, improves blood circulation around the scapula, and reduces discomfort.

5. Fengchi acupoint (GB20): Located in the posterior neck region, beneath the occipital bone, in the depression between the upper ends of the sternocleidomastoid muscle and the trapezius muscle. Massaging this point helps relieve headaches and dizziness, relaxes the muscles at the back of the neck, and assists in alleviating neck and shoulder discomfort.

When performing neck and shoulder massage, it is important to be aware of contraindications and precautions. Massage pressure should be properly controlled to avoid excessive force that may injure muscles. Appropriate techniques must be used to ensure both safety and effectiveness of the massage.
