Is nasal irrigation effective for rhinitis?

Introduction
Nasal irrigation can serve as an adjunctive therapy for rhinitis, helping to clear nasal secretions and reduce mucosal inflammation. It is suitable for most types of rhinitis; however, it cannot cure the disease and should not replace pharmacological treatment. If nasal congestion worsens or if purulent nasal discharge persists alongside headache, prompt medical consultation and standardized evaluation/treatment are essential. Nasal irrigation is typically performed using normal saline or seawater solutions.

Nasal irrigation serves as an adjunctive therapy for rhinitis, helping to cleanse nasal secretions and alleviate mucosal inflammation. It is suitable for most types of rhinitis; however, it cannot cure the disease and must not replace pharmacological treatment. If nasal congestion worsens, or if purulent nasal discharge persists alongside headache, prompt medical consultation and standardized evaluation/treatment are essential.

Nasal irrigation is commonly performed using isotonic saline or seawater-based solutions. These solutions effectively flush out allergens, pathogens, and purulent secretions from the nasal cavity, thereby reducing mucosal irritation caused by accumulated debris and relieving symptoms such as nasal congestion, pruritus, and rhinorrhea. In allergic rhinitis and chronic rhinitis, regular irrigation helps decrease the residence time of inflammatory mediators, improves the intranasal microenvironment, and enhances the mucosa’s intrinsic defensive capacity. When performed correctly, this procedure is gentle and does not damage nasal tissues.

Nasal irrigation is solely a local supportive measure and cannot address the underlying etiology of rhinitis; thus, it cannot serve as monotherapy for curing the disease. Allergic rhinitis requires concomitant anti-allergic medications; chronic sinusitis necessitates combined anti-inflammatory and mucus clearance therapies; and structural abnormalities of the nasal cavity may require surgical intervention. Excessive or improper irrigation may disrupt the normal nasal microbiota and paradoxically exacerbate nasal discomfort.

In daily practice, use isotonic saline for irrigation, control frequency and pressure appropriately, avoid known allergens and irritant gases, maintain a light diet and regular sleep schedule, ensure adequate nasal warmth, and preserve the nasal mucosa’s normal defensive function.
