Introduction
After undergoing periodontal scaling and root planing, it is recommended to avoid cold beverages for 3–7 days. Following treatment, tooth roots may become exposed and dentin sensitivity increases; cold drinks can irritate the teeth, causing sourness and discomfort. If persistent tooth sensitivity or recurrent gingival bleeding and swelling occur, prompt medical evaluation and follow-up are necessary.

After undergoing scaling and root planing for periodontitis, it is recommended to wait 3–7 days before consuming cold beverages. Following treatment, exposed tooth roots and heightened dentin sensitivity make teeth more susceptible to cold stimuli, potentially triggering sharp pain or discomfort. If persistent tooth sensitivity or recurrent gum bleeding and swelling occur, prompt medical evaluation and follow-up are essential.

Periodontal therapy removes dental calculus accumulated on the root surfaces, thereby directly exposing previously covered root surfaces. This leads to open dentinal tubules, allowing cold stimuli to readily reach the dental pulp and trigger sharp, sour sensations. For several days immediately following treatment, patients should consume only warm, soft foods and avoid cold, hot, or acidic items. In mild cases, sensitivity typically begins to subside after three days; however, individuals with more severe sensitivity may require a longer recovery period.

A comprehensive periodontal treatment regimen includes scaling, subgingival root planing, and—in some cases—localized periodontal medication to reduce gingival inflammation. As gingival health improves, tooth sensitivity gradually diminishes. During this time, desensitizing toothpaste may be applied topically to reduce dentin responsiveness. Avoiding cold beverages too soon after treatment is critical, as repeated cold exposure may exacerbate discomfort and impede periodontal tissue healing.

Maintain consistent, gentle brushing twice daily and use dental floss to remove interdental debris. Regulate food and beverage temperatures to minimize exposure of teeth to extreme cold or heat, thereby supporting stable gingival and root health.
