Introduction
Antiallergic drugs primarily refer to antihistamines. Taking these medications may cause drowsiness, as well as symptoms such as dry mouth and nausea. Additionally, they can relax the lower esophageal sphincter, shortening the residence time of food in the stomach, thereby increasing feelings of hunger. In the case of glucocorticoids, the most prominent effect is water and sodium retention.

Allergic reactions may occur due to environmental and other factors. When necessary, many people treat these reactions by taking antiallergic medications—though all medications, to some degree, carry potential side effects. So, what are the common side effects of antiallergic drugs? Below, we address this question.

Side Effects of Antiallergic Medications

Antiallergic drugs primarily refer to antihistamines. Common side effects include drowsiness, dry mouth, and nausea. Additionally, these medications may relax the lower esophageal sphincter, shortening gastric retention time for food and thereby increasing feelings of hunger. In contrast, glucocorticoids most notably cause sodium and water retention. Dosage timing depends on when allergic symptoms occur: patients experiencing daytime symptoms should take their medication in the morning, while those with nighttime symptoms should take it before bedtime. Moreover, continuous use of a single antiallergic drug is not recommended beyond one month. Prolonged use may lead to drug tolerance, diminishing therapeutic efficacy and ultimately compromising its antiallergic effect.

Knowledge Extension: How to Reduce the Likelihood of Allergic Reactions

1. Under medical guidance, adhere consistently to targeted pharmacological management. Hospitals should select appropriate medications based on individual patient symptoms to ensure precise treatment. Some medications carry a relatively high risk of adverse reactions; therefore, healthcare providers must clearly explain proper dosage and administration methods to patients during treatment, minimizing the risk of secondary complications or disease exacerbation.

2. Patients should adopt and maintain a healthy lifestyle to strengthen their immune system and overall resistance to disease—thereby reducing susceptibility to allergic conditions. Specifically, patients should avoid tobacco and alcohol, which can irritate nasal mucosa. Rinsing the nose with cool water may help eliminate bacteria and enhance the nasal mucosa’s defensive capacity, thus decreasing the frequency of rhinitis episodes.
