Introduction
In children under 1 year of age, inguinal hernias may resolve spontaneously as the child’s body develops. After the age of 1 year, children’s physical development is relatively mature, and their tolerance for surgery is generally better. However, this age is not an absolute cutoff for surgical intervention. If the hernia is large, recurrently incarcerated, or has already become incarcerated—even in infants under 1 year—prompt surgical treatment is required.

The incidence of pediatric hernia is relatively high. Generally, surgery is recommended after the child reaches one year of age. In infants under one year old, spontaneous resolution of hernia is possible as their bodies continue to develop. By age one, children’s physical development is more mature, and they tend to tolerate surgery better. However, this age threshold is not an absolute cutoff. If the hernia is large, recurs frequently, or has already become incarcerated—even in infants under one year old—prompt surgical intervention is necessary. Prior to surgery, it is essential that the child does not have an active respiratory infection, as this could increase the risk of complications during anesthesia. Therefore, careful timing of surgery is crucial.
