Introduction
What to Do When Vaginal Discharge Has an Unpleasant Odor: An unpleasant odor in vaginal discharge is typically caused by gynecological inflammation. Since there are various types of gynecological inflammation, women should select appropriate treatment methods based on the specific type. Generally, women with foul-smelling vaginal discharge may be treated with cephalosporin antibiotics or other antibiotics. Additionally, during treatment, they may use normal saline or herbal washes for external genital cleansing.

Foul-smelling vaginal discharge is typically caused by gynecological inflammation. Since there are many types of gynecological inflammation, women must select appropriate treatment methods based on the specific type diagnosed. In general, women experiencing foul-smelling discharge may be treated with cephalosporin antibiotics or other antimicrobial agents. During treatment, external cleansing of the vulva with normal saline or herbal washes is also recommended. However, sexual intercourse must be avoided, and a light, bland diet should be maintained.

What to Do When Vaginal Discharge Has an Unpleasant Odor

1. Herbal Wash for External Use
External washing alone is sufficient—avoid excessive douching inside the vagina. Maintain cleanliness and dryness of the external genitalia. Change undergarments frequently and boil them before reuse.
2. Antibiotics Targeting Anaerobic Bacteria
Oral metronidazole is recommended. It effectively inhibits anaerobic bacterial growth without adversely affecting beneficial Lactobacillus species, making it a preferred therapeutic option.
3. Topical Therapy
Use one tablet of Bifonazole-Tinidazole effervescent vaginal tablet daily at bedtime for seven consecutive days. Alternatively, apply 5 g of 2% clindamycin vaginal cream intravaginally once nightly for seven days. For breastfeeding women, oral medications may pass into breast milk; therefore, topical therapy is strongly recommended.

4. Euryale Seed, Lotus Seed, and Lotus Leaf Congee
Ingredients: Euryale seeds (Qianshi), lotus seeds (Lianzi), one fresh lotus leaf, and glutinous rice.
Preparation: Remove shells from euryale seeds and skins and cores from lotus seeds. Cut the fresh lotus leaf into 3 cm × 2 cm pieces and rinse thoroughly. Combine all ingredients with glutinous rice in a clay pot, add 500–600 mL water, and simmer until cooked. Divide into two doses per day. Effects are typically observed within 5–7 days. A small amount of rock sugar may be added for flavor. This remedy is suitable for patients with excessive vaginal discharge due to spleen deficiency but is contraindicated in those with excess heat in the gastrointestinal tract and constipation.

5. Ginkgo Soy Milk Decoction
Ingredients: 10 ginkgo nuts (with shells and embryos removed), soy milk.
Preparation: Crush the 10 ginkgo nuts and mix them into soy milk. Simmer thoroughly and consume orally once daily. Benefits may appear after several consecutive days. This remedy is indicated for early-stage leukorrhea with increased vaginal discharge. Note: Ginkgo nuts contain mild toxicity; they must be fully cooked and should not be consumed long-term.
6. Purslane Juice Mixed with Egg White
Ingredients: Fresh purslane, two eggs.
Preparation: Wash fresh purslane thoroughly, place in a bowl, and crush with a pestle to extract approximately 60 mL of juice. Separate two eggs, discard the yolks, and mix the egg whites with the purslane juice. Pour boiling water over the mixture and stir well before drinking. Consume once daily. This remedy is suitable for damp-heat type leukorrhea but is not recommended for individuals with spleen-stomach deficiency.

The above outlines management strategies for foul-smelling vaginal discharge. Such odor is generally attributable to gynecological inflammation, which encompasses numerous subtypes; thus, accurate diagnosis and targeted treatment selection are essential. We hope this information proves helpful. Wishing you good health and happiness!
