Introduction
Compared with erythromycin ointment, Mupirocin (Bai Duo Bang) is superior. Mupirocin has a broader antibacterial spectrum and demonstrates excellent bactericidal activity against common pathogens causing skin and soft tissue infections—including *Staphylococcus* and *Streptococcus* species—as well as certain drug-resistant bacterial strains.

When various skin conditions arise, erythromycin ointment and Bactroban (mupirocin ointment) are commonly prescribed. Although these two medications share certain therapeutic similarities, patients naturally prefer the one with superior efficacy for treating their condition.

Differences Between Erythromycin Ointment and Bactroban

Compared to erythromycin ointment, Bactroban is generally considered superior. Bactroban possesses a broader antibacterial spectrum and demonstrates excellent bactericidal activity against common causative pathogens of skin and soft-tissue infections—including Staphylococcus and Streptococcus species—as well as some drug-resistant bacterial strains.

In contrast, erythromycin has a narrower antibacterial spectrum, primarily effective against Gram-positive cocci and bacilli. Its range of bacterial inhibition is less extensive than that of Bactroban. Moreover, Bactroban exhibits greater tissue penetration: when applied topically at equivalent doses, Bactroban penetrates deeper into the subcutaneous tissue, thereby enabling more effective control of infections located at deeper anatomical levels.

Topical use of erythromycin ointment may contribute to the development of systemic antibiotic resistance. Specifically, prolonged topical application of erythromycin may lead to reduced susceptibility not only to topical erythromycin but also to subsequently administered oral erythromycin. By contrast, Bactroban is available only as a topical formulation—no oral dosage form exists—thus posing no risk of inducing systemic antimicrobial resistance.

Considering these three key advantages—broader antibacterial spectrum, superior tissue penetration, and lower potential for inducing antimicrobial resistance—Bactroban is clinically preferable to erythromycin ointment.
