Introduction
First, oxygen therapy should be initiated, which may include simple face mask oxygenation, invasive mechanical ventilation, or non-invasive mechanical ventilation. The goal of oxygen therapy is to increase arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO₂), oxygen saturation (SaO₂), and oxygen content, thereby correcting hypoxemia and ensuring adequate oxygen delivery to tissues—ultimately alleviating tissue hypoxia.
Hypoxemia refers to insufficient oxygen content in the blood, characterized by an arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) below the lower limit of normal for the patient’s age. Its primary manifestations include decreased PaO2 and reduced arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2). Below, we address the question: How is hypoxemia treated?
How Is Hypoxemia Treated?
Hypoxemia primarily results from abnormally low blood oxygen levels—specifically, a PaO2 below 60 mmHg.
The first-line treatment is oxygen therapy, which may include simple face masks, invasive mechanical ventilation, or noninvasive mechanical ventilation. The goal of oxygen therapy is to elevate arterial PaO2, SaO2, and oxygen content, thereby correcting hypoxemia and ensuring adequate tissue oxygenation to alleviate tissue hypoxia.
Oxygen therapy is indicated regardless of the underlying disease. A decline in PaO2 invariably leads to a marked drop in SaO2.
Hypoxemia can be categorized into two types: (1) hypoxemia accompanied by hypercapnia (elevated arterial CO2), and (2) isolated hypoxemia. Treatment options include hyperbaric oxygen therapy and interventions to relieve bronchospasm.
Oxygen therapy is essential in managing hypoxemia and may involve nasal cannula oxygen, simple face mask oxygen, Venturi mask oxygen, noninvasive ventilatory support, or even invasive mechanical ventilation. In cases where hypoxemia results from bronchospasm—for example, during an asthma exacerbation—bronchodilators must be administered concurrently to relieve airway constriction.
