Introduction
“Wind-heat” and “wind-cold” typically refer to wind-heat invasion and wind-cold invasion, respectively—two common patterns of the common cold in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Coughing during sleep may occur in either wind-heat or wind-cold patterns; both can cause nocturnal coughing. However, a single symptom alone is insufficient to differentiate between the two patterns. For an accurate diagnosis and pattern differentiation, it is advisable to consult a qualified TCM practitioner at a professional medical institution, who can then formulate a targeted treatment plan based on the underlying cause.

In daily life, many people suffer greatly from coughing. A persistent cough that causes sore throat can be extremely frustrating. In fact, coughs have numerous underlying causes and are broadly categorized into wind-cold cough and wind-heat cough. So, is coughing during sleep indicative of wind-heat or wind-cold cough? Let’s explore this further.

Is Coughing During Sleep Due to Wind-Heat or Wind-Cold?

“Wind-heat” and “wind-cold” typically refer to wind-heat colds and wind-cold colds, respectively. Coughing during sleep may occur in either condition—both wind-heat and wind-cold colds can cause nocturnal coughing. However, relying on a single symptom alone is insufficient to distinguish between the two. It is advisable to consult a qualified physician at a professional medical facility for pattern identification and syndrome differentiation, followed by targeted treatment based on the underlying cause.

1. Wind-Heat Cold

Wind-heat cold results primarily from invasion of wind-heat pathogens into the body. Common symptoms include headache, cough with thick yellow phlegm, yellow nasal discharge, sore throat, and mild aversion to cold. Under a physician’s guidance, patients may take Lan Qin Oral Liquid or Shuang Huang Lian Oral Liquid for treatment.

2. Wind-Cold Cold

Wind-cold cold is an ordinary cold caused by external invasion of wind-cold pathogens, most commonly occurring in winter. Typical manifestations include nasal congestion, clear runny nose, headache, and marked aversion to cold. Some patients may also experience throat itching, thin white phlegm, and a thin white tongue coating. Under medical supervision, treatments such as Fenghan Ganmao Granules or Ganmaoling Granules may be prescribed.
