Introduction
Serum testing for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a blood-based diagnostic assay performed clinically in patients with a high suspicion of NPC. The most critical biomarker in this test is the Epstein–Barr virus (EBV). EBV infection is strongly associated with NPC; thus, detecting EBV-specific antibodies—particularly elevated immunoglobulin A (IgA) antibodies—in serum provides important diagnostic evidence supporting an NPC diagnosis.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a malignant tumor arising from the roof and lateral walls of the nasopharyngeal cavity. It is one of the most prevalent malignant tumors in China and ranks first among malignant tumors of the ear, nose, and throat. Common clinical manifestations include nasal obstruction, blood-tinged nasal discharge, tinnitus, headache, and hearing loss. So, which serum tests are performed for nasopharyngeal carcinoma? The following section addresses this question.

Which Serum Tests Are Performed for Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma?

Serum testing for nasopharyngeal carcinoma refers to blood-based laboratory examinations conducted clinically in patients with a high suspicion of NPC.

The most critical biomarker is the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). EBV infection is strongly associated with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Detection of EBV antibodies—particularly elevated IgA antibodies—in serum indicates a significant association with NPC. Currently, an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is widely used in China to detect these antibodies.

A positive result for EBV-specific IgA antibodies warrants a high degree of clinical suspicion for nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Following such suspicion, further diagnostic evaluations are required to confirm the diagnosis—for example, specialized nasopharyngeal examinations to identify any newly formed masses, as well as imaging studies.

Ultimately, definitive diagnosis relies on histopathological examination of biopsy tissue obtained from the nasopharyngeal lesion. Therefore, prompt medical consultation and evaluation are strongly recommended.
