Introduction
After retinal detachment surgery, smoking is strictly prohibited. Although some individuals have a strong nicotine addiction, they must still exercise self-control following this procedure. Smoking hinders retinal recovery. Moreover, retinal detachment surgery does not guarantee permanent resolution—there remains a risk of recurrent retinal detachment.

In general, retinal detachment can lead to blindness. The prognosis depends on multiple factors, including the severity of the detachment and the timeliness and effectiveness of treatment. Typically, if retinal detachment remains untreated for nine months, successful recovery becomes highly unlikely. Moreover, even after multiple surgeries, failure to improve vision may result in recurrent retinal detachment—and ultimately, blindness. So, can patients smoke after retinal detachment surgery? Below, we address this question.

Can patients smoke after retinal detachment surgery?

Smoking is strictly prohibited following retinal detachment surgery. Although some individuals have strong nicotine dependencies, self-control is essential postoperatively. Smoking impairs retinal healing and increases the risk of recurrent detachment—meaning surgery alone does not guarantee permanent resolution. Therefore, meticulous postoperative care is critical.

Patients must strictly adhere to their ophthalmologist’s instructions: administer prescribed anti-inflammatory eye drops and ointments on schedule. Avoid strenuous physical activity, ensure adequate rest with eyes closed, and attend regular follow-up visits to monitor retinal healing progress. Complete retinal healing typically takes two to three months.

Silicone oil removal should only occur once the retina has fully healed. Premature removal may deprive the retina of necessary structural support, increasing the risk of re-detachment. Additionally, intraocular pressure (IOP) and visual acuity must be closely monitored; elevated IOP requires prompt management.
