In clinical practice, left lower abdominal pain upon inhalation is commonly caused by pleuritis, costochondritis, or intercostal neuralgia. Additionally, acute abdominal distension, abdominal pain, and gastric disorders may also produce this symptom.
Possible causes of left lower abdominal pain during inhalation include: abdominal muscle strain, left ureteral obstruction, peritonitis, and costochondritis.
Causes of Left Lower Abdominal Pain During Inhalation
Clinically, left lower abdominal pain occurring during inhalation is commonly attributable to pleurisy, costochondritis, or intercostal neuralgia. Additionally, acute abdominal distension, abdominal pain, and gastric disorders may also manifest with this symptom.
Therefore, patients are strongly advised to promptly visit a reputable Grade A-3 hospital for comprehensive evaluation. An abdominal color Doppler ultrasound is recommended to establish a definitive diagnosis, followed by targeted and effective treatment under physician guidance. Patients should prioritize adequate rest, avoid cold and damp environments, and refrain from strenuous physical activity. Dietary recommendations include avoiding spicy, irritating, greasy, fried, and raw/cold/hard foods. Maintaining a positive mental outlook and actively cooperating with medical treatment are also essential.
Peritonitis is a severe surgical condition commonly caused by bacterial infection, chemical irritation, or trauma. Most cases are secondary peritonitis, arising from intra-abdominal organ infections, necrosis and perforation, or traumatic injury. Peritonitis may also present with abdominal pain exacerbated by inhalation.
Costochondritis typically presents as chest pain but may radiate to the renal serosa and be accompanied by exudation, thereby causing abdominal pain during inhalation. Etiological factors may include viral infection, chronic strain of the costosternal ligaments, immune or endocrine abnormalities leading to costochondral nutritional impairment, or other triggers such as severe thoracic trauma, heavy lifting, vigorous exercise, intense coughing, or sneezing.
