Postoperative Care After Circumcision for Phimosis
Phimosis—commonly referred to as redundant prepuce—is a highly prevalent male condition. It may contribute to premature ejaculation, erectile dysfunction, and other related disorders. If left untreated, it can adversely affect marital sexual satisfaction. This is because excessive prepuce completely envelops the glans penis. So, what postoperative care measures should be taken following circumcision for phimosis? Below, we address this question.

Postoperative Care Following Circumcision for Phimosis
Generally, within the first 24 hours after surgery, monitor the incision site for bleeding. Minor oozing visible only on the outer dressing is considered normal. Bleeding resulting from postoperative penile erection or improper self-care can usually be controlled by local pressure application. Early detection and appropriate management of minor bleeding typically allow spontaneous wound healing. However, if the outer dressing becomes fully saturated with blood and blood continues to drip, this indicates active bleeding; in such cases, immediate return to the hospital is required for evaluation and possible re-suturing.
Additionally, patients are advised to avoid showering for ten days postoperatively to keep the surgical site dry. Some patients may experience local discomfort at the circumcised area; scratching must be strictly avoided. Sexual intercourse should be abstained from for one month to prevent wound dehiscence. Urination should be performed promptly to avoid urinary retention. To minimize nocturnal penile erections triggered by the urge to urinate, patients should void before going to sleep. Furthermore, mild pain, swelling, or a burning sensation at the surgical site are common and expected postoperative phenomena; however, severe pain may be managed with prescribed analgesics.
Moreover, because the penis is a distal organ rich in subcutaneous vasculature, postoperative edema of the prepuce is common and typically resolves within 2–4 weeks.
