Introduction
Cervical polyps are actually caused by chronic inflammation, and most cervical polyps are located within the cervical canal. If a cervical polyp is visible at the external cervical os and its base is not deeply embedded, it can be directly removed in the outpatient setting using an oval forceps: grasp the polyp, rotate gently, and then twist it out for pathological examination. If minor bleeding occurs, hemostasis can be achieved by applying gentle pressure with a gauze pad.

Many women develop gynecological conditions in daily life, such as cervical polyps. Once a cervical polyp forms, surgical removal is typically required. How is cervical polyp surgery performed?

How Is Cervical Polyp Surgery Performed?

Cervical polyps are primarily caused by chronic inflammation and are most commonly located within the cervical canal. If a polyp is visible at the external cervical os and its base is relatively superficial, it can be directly removed in an outpatient setting using an elliptical forceps: the polyp is grasped and gently twisted until detached, then sent for pathological examination. Minor bleeding following removal can usually be controlled by applying gentle pressure with a sterile gauze pad.

Although the procedure appears straightforward, strict adherence to surgical indications is essential. Prior to surgery, patients must be carefully evaluated to rule out hematologic disorders, coagulopathies, or active pelvic inflammatory disease. If the polyp is deeply embedded and its pedicle location is unclear, surgery should not be attempted without further evaluation. In such cases, transvaginal ultrasound is recommended to precisely assess the polyp’s origin. If the polyp extends deeply into the endocervical canal or even into the uterine cavity, hysteroscopic-guided resection may be necessary to minimize postoperative bleeding.

Women are advised to undergo routine annual gynecological examinations to help prevent gynecological diseases. Additionally, maintaining good personal hygiene is crucial: wash the external genitalia daily with warm water; wear loose-fitting, breathable underwear; and clean the genital area promptly after sexual intercourse.
