Introduction
Toothache after dental filling can be relieved by taking painkillers and rinsing with warm salt water. During the filling procedure, the tooth’s nerve may become irritated or damaged, leading to varying degrees of discomfort—most of which is tolerable. However, if the pain worsens, pulp therapy—such as root canal treatment—may be recommended. To alleviate post-filling pain, rinsing with warm salt water is one effective method.

Dental fillings are a common procedure used to restore teeth with cavities or structural defects, helping to restore chewing function and prevent further deterioration. However, some patients experience tooth pain after receiving a filling—how can this discomfort be alleviated?

How to Relieve Tooth Pain After a Filling

Post-filling tooth pain can often be relieved by taking over-the-counter analgesics or rinsing with warm salt water. During the filling procedure, the dental pulp (nerve) may sustain minor trauma, resulting in varying degrees of discomfort—most cases involve mild, tolerable pain. However, if the pain intensifies or persists, root canal therapy may be necessary. Rinsing with warm salt water helps reduce inflammation and inhibit bacterial growth, thereby easing post-filling discomfort.

Pain that occurs immediately after a filling may result from irritation caused by the restorative material. In such cases, the filling should be promptly removed and replaced with a soothing (sedative) material to calm the affected tooth structure.

If pain occurs following root canal treatment, it may be addressed through additional restoration or re-filling. After root canal therapy, the tooth no longer contains living nerve tissue, rendering its structure more brittle. Proper restoration enhances both functional performance and longevity. Immediately after a filling, patients should avoid excessively hard or highly adhesive foods. We hope this information is helpful to you.
