Introduction
Salmonella infection is generally self-limiting. In individuals with robust immune systems, infection may be asymptomatic and resolve spontaneously without treatment. However, in vulnerable populations—such as elderly individuals or infants—with compromised physical health, Salmonella infection may cause symptoms including vomiting, diarrhea, or gastroenteritis. In such cases, antimicrobial therapy may be indicated.

In daily life, certain foods contain natural toxins; consuming them unknowingly may lead to poisoning. One common cause of foodborne illness is Salmonella infection. Can Salmonella infection resolve spontaneously?

Can Salmonella infection resolve spontaneously?

In most cases, Salmonella infection is self-limiting. Individuals with robust immune systems may remain asymptomatic and clear the bacteria naturally without medical intervention. However, in vulnerable populations—such as elderly individuals or infants—with compromised physical resilience, Salmonella infection may manifest as vomiting, diarrhea, or gastroenteritis. In such cases, antimicrobial therapy may be warranted; commonly prescribed antibiotics include levofloxacin.

Prevention of Salmonella infection begins with improved husbandry practices and elimination of pathogenic sources. For swine herds frequently affected by salmonellosis, prophylactic antibiotics may be added to feed; however, local emergence of antibiotic-resistant strains must be closely monitored. Upon detection of resistance to a specific antimicrobial agent, an alternative therapeutic should be promptly substituted. Once clinical signs appear, affected animals must be immediately isolated and premises thoroughly disinfected. “Salmonellosis” refers collectively to diseases caused by bacteria belonging to the genus Salmonella across various animal species.

Patients should prioritize rest and strict isolation precautions. Diet should emphasize light, easily digestible foods; avoid greasy, raw, cold, or spicy/irritating items. Increase intake of fresh fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins. Frequent handwashing—before and after meals—is essential. We hope this information proves helpful.
