However, sweet potatoes are high in starch, which breaks down into glucose in the body; therefore, intake must be carefully controlled, and overconsumption should be avoided.

Sweet potatoes are a popular food enjoyed by many people in daily life. What makes them especially noteworthy is their ability to help regulate bodily functions. So, can individuals with high blood sugar consume sweet potatoes?

Individuals with hyperglycemia may consume sweet potatoes in moderation. Sweet potatoes have relatively low sugar content and are highly nutritious, rich in beta-carotene, various vitamins, and trace elements such as potassium, iron, copper, selenium, and calcium. However, they contain a relatively high amount of starch, which breaks down into glucose in the body; therefore, portion control is essential—excessive consumption should be avoided.

For managing hyperglycemia, lifestyle modifications should be the first-line approach: controlling intake of staple foods, consuming approximately 150 g (≈5 oz) of lean meat, 300 g (≈10 oz) of staple foods, and 450 g (≈15 oz) of vegetables daily. Primary dietary choices should emphasize low-sugar, low-starch foods and whole grains alongside abundant vegetables; fruits should be consumed in moderation, preferably between meals. Increase intake of protein-rich foods such as milk, eggs, one or two servings of fish per week, and soy products. Adopt a low-salt diet (≤6 g salt/day), drink about 2,000 mL of water daily, limit cooking oil to three tablespoons (preferably plant-based oils), and abstain from smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. Regular aerobic exercise should be incorporated to enhance glucose metabolism and utilization. Pharmacological treatment may be necessary when lifestyle interventions alone are insufficient.

Individuals with hyperglycemia should also increase their intake of fresh vegetables and low-sugar fruits. Additionally, avoid staying up late and maintain regular physical activity. Recommended aerobic exercises include jogging, brisk walking, swimming, and ball sports; aim for at least three to five sessions per week to actively manage blood glucose levels.
