Introduction
Patients should consider whether they may have hand eczema, urticaria, or corticosteroid-induced dermatitis. Additionally, pruritus of the hands may be caused by herpes zoster virus infection, seasonal factors alone, or early-stage trichomalacia (hair shaft degeneration). If itching is accompanied by scaling on the hands, patients should avoid using over-the-counter anti-itch ointments indiscriminately and refrain from excessive hand washing. Instead, they should maintain proper hand hygiene and seek prompt medical evaluation.

In daily life, some individuals experience itching and peeling of the palms—a condition causing significant physical discomfort and adversely affecting both daily life and work. Understanding the underlying condition is essential for effective prevention and treatment. So, what causes itching, peeling, and hardening of the skin on the palms?

Itching, Peeling, and Hardening of the Palms

Itching, peeling, and thickening (hardening) of the skin on the hands may result from infection by pathogens such as fungi. Patients should consider whether they might have hand eczema, urticaria, or corticosteroid-induced dermatitis. Additionally, this condition may be triggered by varicella-zoster virus infection (e.g., shingles), seasonal factors alone, or early-stage keratoderma.

Peeling and itching of the palms are primarily symptoms of dermatitis. In such cases, patients are strongly advised to promptly consult a dermatologist at a hospital. Eczema has complex etiologies and is a multifactorial skin disorder associated with contact allergies, compromised immunity, and local skin dryness. Frequent exposure to detergents and other irritants may exacerbate symptoms. Some patients also develop secondary fungal infections; therefore, allergy testing and fungal examination of skin scrapings are recommended.

Patients should avoid spicy and irritating foods in daily life, drink plenty of water to promote metabolism, and engage in appropriate outdoor exercise to strengthen immunity. We hope this information proves helpful!
