Diarrhea and fever may result from intestinal inflammation. The most common cause is infectious diarrhea, primarily triggered by viral or bacterial infections. It can occur following rotavirus infection, bacterial food poisoning, or consumption of spoiled or rotten food, leading to diarrhea and fever. Additionally, chronic intestinal inflammation, ulcerative colitis, and early-stage acute appendicitis can also cause diarrhea.

In daily life, diarrhea and fever are both common symptoms; however, when they occur simultaneously, people often become understandably concerned. So, what causes diarrhea accompanied by fever?

What Causes Diarrhea with Fever?

Diarrhea and fever may stem from intestinal inflammation. The most common cause is infectious diarrhea, primarily triggered by viral or bacterial infections. Such infections may follow rotavirus infection, bacterial food poisoning, or consumption of spoiled or contaminated food—leading to both diarrhea and fever. Additionally, chronic intestinal inflammatory conditions (e.g., ulcerative colitis), early-stage acute appendicitis, and gastrointestinal exposure to cold can also induce diarrhea and fever, sometimes accompanied by vomiting and abdominal distension. To determine the underlying cause, a complete blood count (CBC) is recommended. Treatment typically includes anti-infective and antidiarrheal medications such as montmorillonite powder and ofloxacin capsules.

For patients with mild-to-moderate diarrhea and fever, bed rest is advised. Under medical supervision, oral glucose-electrolyte solutions may be administered to replenish lost fluids and electrolytes. Antibiotic therapy may be necessary in certain cases. Some patients presenting with diarrhea and fever may have bacterial infections; therefore, stool analysis should be promptly performed at a local hospital to identify the causative pathogen, enabling targeted antimicrobial treatment.

Dietary precautions are essential: avoid spicy and irritating foods, increase fluid intake, and maintain water and electrolyte balance to prevent dehydration. We hope this information proves helpful.
