Introduction
“Type A, Rh-positive” is a blood typing test. In addition to the ABO blood group system (types A, B, and O), the Rh blood group system is another major blood group system. The Rh system is the second most clinically important blood group system. Five Rh antigens with significant clinical relevance are D, C, c, E, and e. Among these, the D antigen has a positivity rate of approximately 99.7% in China.

When “Rh-positive” appears on a lab report, many people feel confused. So, what does “Rh-positive blood type” mean?

What does “Rh-positive blood type” mean?

“Type A Rh-positive” is one parameter used in blood typing. In addition to the ABO blood group system (types A, B, O, and AB), there is also the Rh blood group system—the second most clinically significant blood group system. Within the Rh system, five antigens hold particular clinical relevance: D, C, c, E, and e. Among these, the D antigen has a positivity rate of approximately 99.7% in China; thus, the vast majority of individuals are D-antigen positive.

Medical institutions typically report either “Rh(D)-positive” or “Rh(D)-negative.” Therefore, if a test report states “Type A positive,” it actually means “Type A, Rh(D)-positive.” Human blood types are determined by the specific antigens present on the surface of red blood cells. The two most commonly used classification systems are the ABO and Rh blood group systems. In the ABO system, the presence or absence of A and B antigens on red blood cells defines four blood types: A, B, O, and AB.

The Rh blood group system specifically refers to whether the D antigen is present on red blood cells: its presence indicates Rh(D)-positivity, while its absence indicates Rh(D)-negativity. Rh blood typing shows that the overwhelming majority of people are Rh(D)-positive—a common and normal blood type requiring no special intervention.
