Correct Administration Method for Acarbose

Acarbose is a commonly used oral antidiabetic medication, primarily indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, especially in patients with elevated postprandial blood glucose levels.

Acarbose should be taken as a whole tablet immediately before a meal or chewed with the first few bites of food. Gastrointestinal side effects—such as abdominal distension and diarrhea—may occur; therefore, it is recommended to initiate therapy at a low dose.

If a dose is missed during a meal or within 30 minutes after eating, the full prescribed dose may be taken as soon as possible. If the omission is noticed more than 30 minutes after completing the meal, increased physical activity may help compensate for the missed dose. Acarbose must be used strictly in accordance with the physician’s instructions.
