Disease description:

I have never been in particularly good health; I frequently catch colds and develop fevers. Recently, my symptoms worsened, and after undergoing medical examinations, I was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). Can myelodysplastic syndrome be cured?

Dr. Liu Guoqiang
Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are primarily characterized by dysplastic hematopoiesis and carry a relatively high risk of transformation into acute leukemia. Clinically, MDS presents as refractory cytopenia—either single-lineage or multilineage—with varying degrees of anemia, bleeding, and infection. The risk of progression from MDS to acute leukemia increases progressively according to the risk stratification, with higher risk observed in the high-risk group compared to the low-risk group. Consequently, the overall cure rate for MDS is low; however, cure remains possible in select cases.
