What is Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS)?
Disease description:
My friend recently told me she was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), but I’ve never heard of it. Could you please explain what myelodysplastic syndrome is?
Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is typically caused by abnormal proliferation of hematopoietic stem cells. Common manifestations include ineffective hematopoiesis, refractory cytopenia, and progressive bone marrow failure. The exact etiology remains largely unknown. Clinically, patients primarily present with marked peripheral blood cytopenias—specifically, significant reductions in red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Management mainly relies on supportive transfusion therapy to maintain adequate blood cell counts.
