My neighbor has been diagnosed with lupus erythematosus, yet he frequently goes out and travels around. We are all quite fearful of him. Could you please clarify whether lupus erythematosus is contagious?

Dr. Liu Yong
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is not contagious; however, it can significantly affect the body. It predominantly occurs in young women and is characterized primarily by symptoms such as malar (butterfly-shaped) rash, skin lesions, and internal organ damage. SLE is largely associated with genetic factors; thus, individuals with a family history of the disease have a higher risk of developing it than the general population. Patients should, whenever possible, avoid contact with cold water and wear cotton clothing.
