What should be done about Alzheimer’s disease?
Disease description:
My father-in-law has recently been experiencing frequent memory lapses, and we suspect he may have Alzheimer’s disease. My husband and I are quite concerned. Could you please advise on how to manage Alzheimer’s disease?
Currently, Alzheimer’s disease is primarily treated with medications. The main drug used is donepezil hydrochloride—a second-generation cholinesterase inhibitor—that helps alleviate memory loss symptoms in the early to moderate stages of Alzheimer’s disease. The dosage is typically initiated at a low level and gradually increased. In addition to pharmacological treatment, various cognitive exercises are also essential. Regular communication with the patient is important, along with engaging in brain-stimulating activities such as solving word puzzles, reading books and newspapers, playing chess or Gomoku (Five-in-a-Row), and completing crossword puzzles.
