Does the oral polio vaccine (OPV) in sugar-coated tablet form have side effects?

Disease description:

Our baby is four months old. Previously, the baby received the inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) injection; this time, we’ve been advised to administer the oral polio vaccine (OPV) “sugar cube.” Does the live attenuated oral polio vaccine have any side effects?

The oral polio vaccine (OPV) in the form of sugar-coated pills is an attenuated live vaccine and is considered relatively safe, with no serious adverse effects. Within one to two days after administration, some infants may develop a mild fever, typically low-grade (not exceeding 38.5°C), which usually resolves spontaneously with adequate hydration and physical cooling measures. A minority of infants may also experience mild diarrhea; if not severe, this can be managed by increasing fluid intake, including breast milk or formula.
