My child is struggling academically, frequently forgetful, and seems unable to retain anything he learns. I’m concerned that his IQ may be low, so I’m planning to have him take an IQ test. Could you tell me what the typical (normal) IQ range is?

Dr. Jiang Zhiyang
A normal individual’s IQ falls within the range of 85–110. Individuals with an IQ below 85 are considered to have relatively lower intelligence, while those with an IQ above 110 are considered to have relatively higher intelligence. IQ, or Intelligence Quotient, is primarily assessed through standardized cognitive tests. An individual’s overall intellectual capacity is determined not only by IQ but also by various other influencing factors; therefore, it is important to avoid relying solely on IQ scores or standardized intelligence test results when evaluating intellectual ability.
