Disease description:

My baby has just received a vaccination. The doctor said that the Japanese encephalitis (JE) vaccine should be administered two months later. I noticed it’s written as the “live attenuated JE vaccine.” How many doses of the live attenuated JE vaccine are required in total?

The attenuated Japanese encephalitis vaccine is normally administered in two doses. The first dose is given at 8 months of age; however, if the child has a cold or fever, vaccination may be appropriately postponed. The second (booster) dose is administered upon completion of 24 months (i.e., at 2 years of age). Prior to vaccination, parents must ensure that the child is in good health and free of any contraindications. After vaccination, the child should be observed for 30 minutes.
